Happy New Years Eve

There are obviously a million things going on tonight worth checking out. Unfortunately, most of them are sold out. However, there are a few events that will still have tickets. You could try Pianos, for instance, where Passion Pit will be DJing the shit out of the night. Tickets won't be cheap at the door, if their are any at all, but if you do get there early to nab one you'll enjoy a three hour open bar (with the top shelf) and a midnight champagne toast with one of my personal favorite DJs.

There is a good lineup at Shea Stadium in BK. The Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt! and Ghost Mall will be there as well as the death metal LITURGY. That will be going all night and into the morning.

The Market Hotel is hosting Mister Saturday Night's party. They'll a few decent DJs as usual and an open bar as well as some sort of goodies and surprises. This could be a great time, the people are always very friendly and ready to socialize with strangers, so if your in the area with $60 to drop check it out.

Check out Brooklyn Vegan's lists of events for some more ideas.

If you can't find a live music venue to hit up, there are parties everywhere, including my bar (where I will be working). Stop by at 626 Vanderbilt, Plan B, for a drink with me and the rest of our staff. If you mention The Brooklyn Night, you will receive a drink on me, as always.

Happy New Year!

love,
Jake

Titus Andronicus and other New Years Eve Party Hardies

Titus Andronicus - well-loved lo-fi post-punk act from Jersey - is playing Mercury Lounge on New Years Eve. Their are still tickets available but you might want to get on it cause they're good and, well, it's New Years Eve; everybody and their mother will be trying to get in somewhere. Opening the late night set - starts at 1:30 - are The So So Glos. Earlier in the evening at Mercury are the Detroit Cobras, preceded by The A-Bones and The Underthings.

Also on the Bowery's bill are The Word, Robert Randolph's project that came before the Family Band. He'll be playing with John Medeski (of Medeski, Martin and Wood) and North Mississippi All-Stars. This is mostly a jam band kind of gig but it will definitely be enjoyable and all players will be nothing short of virtuoso.

Soulive, another funk/jam act, is sold out at Music Hall of Williamsburg; Patti Smith and Her Band (as billed) is sold out at Bowery Ballroom.

Gogol Bordello for two more nights

Gogol Bordello is in the middle of a three night stint at Webster Hall in NYC. I had the privilege of catching Gogol Bordello at Bonnaroo in 2008 and was thoroughly impressed by their energy and excitement. You'll recognize them by their gypsy getups and music something close to what you'd get if you took World Inferno, (early) Against Me!, and Beirut and threw them into your household cuisinart. Tickets are sold out but, as always, their are scalpers to be taken advantage of. Webster Hall is general admission so show up early for a good spot.

Adult Swim ATL remixes

Adult Swim recently released a compilation featuring a number of indie groups' remixes of various ATL acts such as Young Jeezy (whose mix I found pretty hilarious), Cee-Lo, Gucci, Playboy-Tre, etc. Here is one track that I liked. You can get the whole comp for free here. Thanks to Gorilla vs. Bear for this one.

Taking a break

Hello Brooklyn lovers,
I will be taking a semi hiatus from blogging for a month or so to graduate and heal my illnesses. When I return it will be with a vengeance. I will post at least once a day with events, music, art and whatever else i can dig up that is of interest in the Bushwick/Williamsburg area.

Hope Thanksgiving and Christmas are great. You'll hear from me before 2010.

ps If you're looking for things to do and were relying solely on me to help you out (yea right) check out Brooklyn Vegan and Free Williamsburg. Links to those sites are on the right of this page.

Friday, Nov. 20 in BK

Three DJs to check out tonight...

Crystal Fighters are an electro outfit, using involved rhythms and alternative sounds to create an amalgamation of sounds that are intellectually stimulating and make you want to dance. They are playing tonight at Glasslands with Tanlines and Lemonade. Tanlines combine jungle beats with drawn out melodies and rhythmic vocals. His set will utilize visuals as well as sounds to create a dirty dance brawl. Lemonade hail from San Francisco and will no doubt start their DJ set off right with beat heavy dance mixes and ethereal layers. Don't miss it; Glasslands is located at 289 Kent Ave in Williamsburg, btw s 1st and s 2nd. starts at 9, $8 at the door.

Saturday Night: Condom Pocket/New Mother at Trash Bar

Tonight is Condom Pocket's last show and New Mother's first. Yes, Condom Pocket is officially changing their name to New Mother (and you heard it here first). They will be rocking the stage at Trash Bar in Williamsburg this evening at 9 pm sharp. As always, the Trash Bar hosts a $7 show with open bar included from 8-9. Come by and say hi.

Mister Saturday Night is hosting a party at the Market Hotel with DJs and drinks. The night will most likely stretch until 8 in the morning so if you get bored with other plans you know where to go. For the early birds, there will be some sort of open bar from 10-11.

Friday Night: Brooklyn Grange Benefit, Art Brut and Surfer Blood at Brooklyn Bowl

Tonight there is a benefit party for Brooklyn Grange, a 1 acre rooftop farm planned by Roberta's restaurant in Bushwick, at Starr space (110 Starr street). There will be food and drink specials, DJs and 'a stripper pole!?'. Brooklyn Grange is proposed to start planting seeds in April and will be selling fresh produce to restaurants and the public (green market type deal) in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint/Bushwick area. Doors at 8pm, $10.

Also Tonight:
After playing a number of CMJ showcases and signing to Brooklyn indie label Kanine, Surfer Blood returns to NYC. They will be opening for London post-goth group Art Brut, with whom they are currently touring. The show is at Brooklyn Bowl which, if you haven't been, is worth a visit. There is bowling, live music, great local beers from Six Point and Brooklyn Brewery, as well as great food from Blue Ribbon (fried seafood and other grub). Doors at 6, show at 9. 21+ for $14.

At the Market Hotel:
Damn Kakalack Moonshine Party (I don't know what it is but it sounds like it could be cool)

Silent Barn:
Go Ghosts (doesn't suck)
The Wealthy Assholes
Affair D’Coeur
Byrds
Slow Country (sucks)

Liturgy is playing Union Pool with Malkuth, Orphan, and Krallice. This is a heavy fucking show!

This is some shit!

Friday the 13th Cuddle Puddle Jam

I saw this on Free Williamsburg and wanted to share it with whoever dares view this blog.

White Denim at Music Hall of Williamsburg

This is a show that I am really sorry I'm going to miss. White Denim is stopping off at Music Hall of Williamsburg for a one night stand with Brazos and My Mind. White Denim could be likened to a edgier psychedelic Modest Mouse or The Shins. There is no reason for you not to check out Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight. Show starts at 9. Cover is $15 at the door, $13 if purchased online.

Flaming Lips: Nudity All Over Again

The new video for the Flaming Lips' song 'Watching the Planets' is totally packed with stark naked bodies. They're biking, dancing and carrying Wayne Coyne's naked body, yes him as well. The song is pretty good too. Check it out here.

Thursday Night:

Tonight, Bushwick's Market Hotel is hosting Slim Twig, Dirty Beaches and Eartheater. Slim Twig combines ambient and dissonant guitar and synth sounds, acoustic and looped drums, and Slim's own fucked up version of rockabilly vocals to create a blanket of sounds that leap at the listener from time to time. His live show will almost certainly include other musicians, however he is a one man band hailing from Toronto. Slim will surely put on a memorable show, but don't take my word for it; check out this live clip of his song White Fantaseee.
Dirty Beaches is another Canadian act, this time from Montreal. He too is a one man act and, unlike Slim Twig, will probably be alone on the stage. Dirty Beaches, or Alex Zhang Hungtai, uses his guitar and loop pedal to create minimalist experimental music. Paired with hairy vocals, Hungtai's raunchy guitars contribute to a retro sound that will be appropriate for Slim Twig's opener.
Eartheater combines folk songs and thrash punk in one set. Singer Alex has a beautiful voice which she will no doubt show off before bursting into a guitar and drum duo based punk set. Worth checking out.

Three part harmonies combine with dissonant guitars and punky drums to create a unique and rugged sound. Check out Todd P's website for more info. Starts at 8. $7, all ages.

China Invades Brooklyn...we knew it was coming

(Carsick Cars)
The Chinese Underground Invasion tour arrives in NYC Thursday, 11/5, at Powerhouse Arena in DUMBO, and Friday, 11/6, at Glasslands. Maybe Mars, Beijing's premier indie label, has sent over three of their best acts to tear down the halls of Brooklyn. Carsick Cars, PK-14, and Xiao He will have the first of their US dates in the home of Powerhouse Books to celebrate the Book/Exhibition launch of Matthew Niederhauser's new project Sound Kapital: Beijing's Music Underground. The Arena is a 5,000 square foot venue complete with glass facade and lots of artsy bells and whistles. Glasslands hosts art exhibits, parties and concerts every week all week. Glasslands will host Brooklyn locals These Are Powers, Soft Circle, and DJ Zachary Mexico in addition to the international acts. Thursday show starts at 7. rsvp at rsvp@powerhousearena.com Friday show starts at 9. Cover is $7, hosted by MyOpenbar.

Monday's doings

If you haven't got all of your Halloween cravings out by now, you might find a cure tonight at the Knitting Factory. Comedic song writer Voltaire takes the stage tonight at 8:30. Voltaire's music is a combination of eastern European instrumentation (fiddles and accordion) and monster mash-esque vocals. He is currently touring with Hellblinki Sextet. Doors at 8, set at 8:30. $10 cover.

Friday Night, say no more.

I know where I am going to be tonight. I will literally be "Above the Auto Parts Store" listening to Lightning Bolt tear shit apart. Lightning Bolt is a duo comprised of bass and drums, is heavy and bites with teeth. LB combines hardcore with experimental math rock and always leaves you sweaty and breathless. Opening for Lightning Bolt are Black Dice and TV Ghost. Black Dice is an electronic experimental project that has not lost it's ability to make you dance. They have some heavy digs but for the most part are just really fucking interesting, a great addition to the nights lineup. Show starts at 8. Tickets are $12, no advance tickets so get there before it's packed.

If you're looking for a garage rock kind of party, hit up the Market Hotel. The Sundelles, a throwback psychedelic group from Brooklyn, will be rocking out with I'm Turning Into, Shark? and the The Darlings. I'm Turning Into take a page out of the throwback book as well, however they have a youthful exuberance that breaths new life into the band's music. And it's only a few blocks from Above the Auto Parts Store so if you don't like either show you can check out the other. Starts at 9. Cover.

Thursday is the new Saturday!

The coolest place to be tonight is probably the Silent Barn. The Barn will be hosting a show-paper benefit with four brooklyn bands covering four monumental 80s punk bands: Grocery Theif (throw-back punk outfit) as Joy Division, Le Rug (post-punk w/ Ray Weiss) as Dead Kennedys, Graffiti Monsters (a lo-fi/punk/experimental project) as Minor Threat, and Rainbow Party (more modern punk) as Gang of Four. All four are going to be awesome. Starts at 8.

Also happening on thursday is Shea Stadium. They have a long night of Brooklyn noise makers including Equestrian, The Binary Marketing, Video Daughters, The Last Nights, Childproof, Touching You and more. Video Daughters highlight the night with low guitar riffs and robot electronics. Their swimmy vocals effect the room like a wash of acid haze. Show starts at 8.

That's all for today, gotta go to work. If you're bored come by Plan B in Prospect Heights for a drink. Mention this blog and it's on me (I'm the tender).

Vic Chesnutt and Guy Piccioto @ Music Hall of Williamsburg: Tuesday, October 27

Vic Chesnutt and his gang of musicians took to the stage on Tuesday at the Music Hall of Williamsburg for a night of crooning and drawn out chord progressions. A parapalegic sad song singer/songwriter from Athens, Georgia, Vic was helped on stage by his sidekick violinist. Also joining him were as many as 5 guitars, keys, bass (double bass at times), trumpet, and drums. In his entourage could be found Guy Piccioto of Fugazi and members of Thee Silver Mount Zion (also Godspeed You! Black Emperor), and Witchie.

The music was feircly epic, as one could only expect from 5 guitarists playing along to one progression. Ultimately the effect of so many instruments eliminated the opportunity to hear much more than a wall of sound, which was probably what Vic was going for. Efrim Menuck of Thee Silver Mount Zion/Godspeed You! Black Emperor had as close to a solo as anyone when he played out the main riffs on the upper registers of his guitar...for most of the set. Guy, remembered for his stage antics in Fugazi, had his moments of spontaneity, springing about in his chair from time to time (when the music got especially epic). In addition, he played the same black and white Rickenbacker that he sported in his days of dischord.

Vic's set lacked variety. The sheer number of musicians on stage seemed to blunt the knife, with which he attempted to split audience members' hearts. Any "wow" effect that the band may have accomplished with their initial appearance (strength in numbers?) was smothered by the audible blanket of vibrating strings that befell the audiences ears. Songs like "You Are Never Alone" and "Phillip Guston" lost much of their rustic quality. Though it affords Vic the right to bill with a star studded cast, the decision to burden the songs with so many instrumental personalities may have been ill advised.

Despite being crammed on the stage with as many as 8 other players, Vic did not lose his ability to capture the audience. The sincerity with which he sings his sorrowful anthems is apparent in his face as well as his voice and is not easily forgotten. At times Vic seemed to howl at the blue light that flooded the stage from above. Ultimately, his charisma was able to carry a performance that was otherwise lost in a sea of sounds. You would have been sad to miss it as a Vic Chesnutt fan. Otherwise, look forward to better performances this fall.

My New Blog

Hello world,
My name is Jake and this is my first blog. I figured it made sense to start with a free one as I don't have any followers and I have no idea what I'm doing...yet! The Brooklyn Night will eventually be a blog/event organizer for music and arts, primarily in the area of Bushwick and East Williamsburg. So many exciting things are going on in the area that I couldn't help but jump on the bandwagon. I will be reviewing shows and releases, interviewing bands, and reporting on the night life of Bushwick and Williamsburg. If you need something to do tonight, here will be where to look. If you want to know what happened last night, here will be where to look.

So welcome and I hope you enjoy what you find. (I'll make sure to post something soon.)

Peace and love,
Jake
