Taking a break

Hello Brooklyn lovers,
I will be taking a semi hiatus from blogging for a month or so to graduate and heal my illnesses. When I return it will be with a vengeance. I will post at least once a day with events, music, art and whatever else i can dig up that is of interest in the Bushwick/Williamsburg area.

Hope Thanksgiving and Christmas are great. You'll hear from me before 2010.

ps If you're looking for things to do and were relying solely on me to help you out (yea right) check out Brooklyn Vegan and Free Williamsburg. Links to those sites are on the right of this page.

Three DJs to check out tonight...

Crystal Fighters are an electro outfit, using involved rhythms and alternative sounds to create an amalgamation of sounds that are intellectually stimulating and make you want to dance. They are playing tonight at Glasslands with Tanlines and Lemonade. Tanlines combine jungle beats with drawn out melodies and rhythmic vocals. His set will utilize visuals as well as sounds to create a dirty dance brawl. Lemonade hail from San Francisco and will no doubt start their DJ set off right with beat heavy dance mixes and ethereal layers. Don't miss it; Glasslands is located at 289 Kent Ave in Williamsburg, btw s 1st and s 2nd. starts at 9, $8 at the door.

Saturday Night: Condom Pocket/New Mother at Trash Bar

Tonight is Condom Pocket's last show and New Mother's first. Yes, Condom Pocket is officially changing their name to New Mother (and you heard it here first). They will be rocking the stage at Trash Bar in Williamsburg this evening at 9 pm sharp. As always, the Trash Bar hosts a $7 show with open bar included from 8-9. Come by and say hi.

Mister Saturday Night is hosting a party at the Market Hotel with DJs and drinks. The night will most likely stretch until 8 in the morning so if you get bored with other plans you know where to go. For the early birds, there will be some sort of open bar from 10-11.

Friday Night: Brooklyn Grange Benefit, Art Brut and Surfer Blood at Brooklyn Bowl

Tonight there is a benefit party for Brooklyn Grange, a 1 acre rooftop farm planned by Roberta's restaurant in Bushwick, at Starr space (110 Starr street). There will be food and drink specials, DJs and 'a stripper pole!?'. Brooklyn Grange is proposed to start planting seeds in April and will be selling fresh produce to restaurants and the public (green market type deal) in the Williamsburg/Greenpoint/Bushwick area. Doors at 8pm, $10.

Also Tonight:
After playing a number of CMJ showcases and signing to Brooklyn indie label Kanine, Surfer Blood returns to NYC. They will be opening for London post-goth group Art Brut, with whom they are currently touring. The show is at Brooklyn Bowl which, if you haven't been, is worth a visit. There is bowling, live music, great local beers from Six Point and Brooklyn Brewery, as well as great food from Blue Ribbon (fried seafood and other grub). Doors at 6, show at 9. 21+ for $14.

At the Market Hotel:
Damn Kakalack Moonshine Party (I don't know what it is but it sounds like it could be cool)

Silent Barn:
Go Ghosts (doesn't suck)
The Wealthy Assholes
Affair D’Coeur
Byrds
Slow Country (sucks)

Liturgy is playing Union Pool with Malkuth, Orphan, and Krallice. This is a heavy fucking show!

This is some shit!

Friday the 13th Cuddle Puddle Jam

Weird Video

I saw this on Free Williamsburg and wanted to share it with whoever dares view this blog.

White Denim at Music Hall of Williamsburg

This is a show that I am really sorry I'm going to miss. White Denim is stopping off at Music Hall of Williamsburg for a one night stand with Brazos and My Mind. White Denim could be likened to a edgier psychedelic Modest Mouse or The Shins. There is no reason for you not to check out Music Hall of Williamsburg tonight. Show starts at 9. Cover is $15 at the door, $13 if purchased online.

Flaming Lips: Nudity All Over Again

The new video for the Flaming Lips' song 'Watching the Planets' is totally packed with stark naked bodies. They're biking, dancing and carrying Wayne Coyne's naked body, yes him as well. The song is pretty good too. Check it out here.

Thursday Night:

Tonight, Bushwick's Market Hotel is hosting Slim Twig, Dirty Beaches and Eartheater. Slim Twig combines ambient and dissonant guitar and synth sounds, acoustic and looped drums, and Slim's own fucked up version of rockabilly vocals to create a blanket of sounds that leap at the listener from time to time. His live show will almost certainly include other musicians, however he is a one man band hailing from Toronto. Slim will surely put on a memorable show, but don't take my word for it; check out this live clip of his song White Fantaseee.
Dirty Beaches is another Canadian act, this time from Montreal. He too is a one man act and, unlike Slim Twig, will probably be alone on the stage. Dirty Beaches, or Alex Zhang Hungtai, uses his guitar and loop pedal to create minimalist experimental music. Paired with hairy vocals, Hungtai's raunchy guitars contribute to a retro sound that will be appropriate for Slim Twig's opener.
Eartheater combines folk songs and thrash punk in one set. Singer Alex has a beautiful voice which she will no doubt show off before bursting into a guitar and drum duo based punk set. Worth checking out.

Monday's doings

If you haven't got all of your Halloween cravings out by now, you might find a cure tonight at the Knitting Factory. Comedic song writer Voltaire takes the stage tonight at 8:30. Voltaire's music is a combination of eastern European instrumentation (fiddles and accordion) and monster mash-esque vocals. He is currently touring with Hellblinki Sextet. Doors at 8, set at 8:30. $10 cover.
